A Koala hug bookmark makes a fantastic Koala craft with a free printable template and cut file! If you’re looking for more alphabet crafts you can try my alphabet puppets here! This post contains affiliate links.
Koalas are partially responsible for Australia’s good rap and they are just the cutest animals! Even cuter? A koala that ensures that the next time you pick up a favorite book, you don’t need to reread half of it to see where you’re up to.

The arms on this adorable Koala paper craft hug the page to clip onto your book. It’s a fantastic koala craft for learning the letter K (precut the pieces if doing this with preschoolers – they can assemble it like a puzzle). It’s even better for emergent readers to craft, especially those who can already read bigger books and need the place holders!
I love a project that can be done by anyone, and I actually had fun making this as an adult who loves paper crafting. To that end, I included an SVG version of this template so that you can use it with cutting machines too. Make dozens and dozens of these to sell at school fundraisers and craft fairs, to add to a book gift as a personal touch.
I also included two PDF templates for hand cutting (great for non-Cricut users, or for kids!) One is an outline template – the original template designed for this koala craft. Use this with colorful craft papers. The other is a full color version that you can print on card stock and just cut the parts straight out of! You don’t get the benefit of the high quality, thorough, and often textured color of card stock, but you still get the multi-layer, hand-crafted look. I recommend this template for kids who are old enough to cut on their own, but really just there.
Download your koala craft template here
You’ll receive a ZIP folder with both PDFs and the SVG. The SVG is for using with cutting machines (you’ll be able to adjust sizing, fix colors, duplicate as many shapes as you’ll want). The PDF is ready to print, trace, and cut by hand. If you need help, this article can help you unzip your file (it’s really easy once you learn).

What you need to make a koala hug bookmark
- Colored cardstock (or white if using the colored PDF). You can use construction paper, it’s just not as pretty or solid
- Glue
- Black marker
- Pencil
- Scissors
How to make a Koala bookmark
1. Cut your parts
Find your papers: cream, grey, black and pink cardstock papers for the koala craft. Trace the nose on black paper, the rosy cheeks and the inner ear parts on pink paper. Trace the body parts (head, ears, hands, paws and lower body) on grey or gray-brown colored paper and trace the furry bit on cream or white paper. Cut out all your parts. (Or use a Cricut cutting machine to cut them using the SVG file.
2. Body & feet
Attach the oval foot cutouts on the wider side of the lower body cutout and attach the cream fur on the top center of your main body.
3. The hug
Glue on your hands! When doing this part of your koala craft, make sure you only place your glue along the top straight side of your cutout, not along the length, so that you get the benefit of the hug.
4. Trim
If you’re being perfectionist about things, you can trim the extra parts of the attached hands to align the patterns with the body pattern. Only if you really, really want….
5. Get a-head!
Assemble your head. Attach the inner ears to the main ears – centered. Attach the eyes and nose to the head cutout. Lastly, attach the pink circle cutouts to both cheeks. Add a little white glare with gel pen to the eyes if you want.
6. Finish ‘er up!
Use a black marker to draw the mouth of the koala bear. Attach the ears to the top of the head and then attach the head to the body. Your Koala craft is complete!
